Value and Pattern Fish with Britto

Two week Project
WEEK 1

PREPARE black paint by adding one to one and 1/2 of tablespoons of dish soap into a pint of tempura black paint

DISCUSSION: Value
 What does value mean?
What happens when you add white to a color? TINT
What happens when you add black to a color? SHADE
Pure color is in the middle
what is pure color? Color in it's truest form right from the bottle
Tint is between white and pure it is a little of both mixed together
Shade is between pure and black and it is a little of both mixed together.
Look at Jim Dine's Green hearts done in the 80’s
how did he make his hearts lighter?
 What other colors are prominent?
How many values of red do you see?
How do you think he created this piece?
can you see the brush strokes?
if the artwork were only one shade of red, would it be a interesting?

Do you have on pattern today?
When you discuss pattern what subject are you on?
Why is pattern important to art?
ARTIST: Romero Britto (1963-      )
He was born in Recife, Brazil
Self-taught at an early age, he painted on surfaces such as newspapers.
In 1983, he traveled to Paris where he was introduced to the work of Matisse and Picasso.
He combined influences from cubism with pop, to create a vibrant, iconic style that The New York Times describes, "exudes warmth, optimism and love."
In 1988, Britto moved to Miami and emerged as an international artist.
In the following year, he was selected alongside Andy Warhol and Keith Haring for Absolut Vodka's "Absolut Art" campaign.
Britto's pop sensibility has since leant itself to many collaborations with such brands as Audi, Bentley, Disney, Technomarine, Evian and FIFA, for whom he created an official poster for the 2010 World Cup.
He has also illustrated several books published by Simon & Schuster and Rizzoli.
Britto's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in over 100 countries
Britto considers the role of an artist to be an agent of positive change.
